The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS), formerly known as the Department of Chinese, Translation and Interpretation, was established in 1988. Our department specializes in language sciences with a diverse and comprehensive focus, and develops academic programs to meet societal needs. The department offers a variety of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, among which the master's programs in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Speech Therapy are particularly well-regarded.
In recent years, the department has been collaborating with other faculties to apply various technologies to different research projects, such as Department of Biomedical Engineering and School of Nursing. Utilizing technologies such as ultrasound imaging, endoscopy, and cervical auscultation, the research focuses on the oropharyngeal deterioration in swallowing functions in the aging population. The research findings have been published at numerous international academic conferences and journals. The research team has also been promoting community education, participating in GIES and organizing seminars at various institutions, raising public awareness of swallowing difficulties, and promoting the application of clinical instrumental swallowing assessments by community speech therapists to identify high-risk cases early and initiate timely treatment.
